CVI has been hosting a local Toastmasters International Club called Beyond Sight Communicators since 2004. It was established by former clients because they realized the importance of providing a group that would help those with vision loss build their self-confidence and speaking skills. I have been an active member since 2006 and have served in just about every position. What I like best about Beyond Sight Communicators is the phenomenal people I get to hang out with at CVI and other ToastMasters International meetings, trainings, conferences and contests.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending meetings twice a month where they learn to get comfortable giving speeches, fulfilling roles and offices and conducting inclusive fun meetings while in fellowship with CVI friends.

Membership in Toastmasters is one of the greatest investments I have made in myself since being diagnosed with macular degeneration and receiving services at CVI. At $36 every six months, it is also one of the most cost-effective skill-building tools available anywhere. A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere which compliments programs and services at CVI. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations and this feedback supports members by providing structure, encouragement, positive correction and humor, which is a key part of the program’s success. Meeting participants also give one to three minute impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct the meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and parliamentary procedure. All of this is very valuable in preparing for job interviews, professional meetings and presentations.

Toastmasters members receive certificates for their presentations.

Beyond Sight Communicators is an ‘open to everyone’ club not just for CVI clients or the blind community; as we have had members join us from other local Toastmasters clubs. If you are looking to develop speaking and leadership skills, want to win that job interview or Ignite your career, Beyond Sight Communicators Toastmasters club can help. Join us!

The Beyond Sight Communicators meets for one hour on the first Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. and the 3rd Thursday at 12:15 p.m. The next meeting will be on August 2nd at 4:30 p.m. in the Center for the Visually Impaired’s BellSouth conference room. Come and join us at CVI at 739 West Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta, GA. For more information contact John W. Smith at 404-245-8230.
